Managing your home's energy efficiency doesn't have to be challenging. In fact, it can be quite easy. To help, we're busting five common myths with practical tips.

MYTH: Turing off your HVAC system saves energy.

FACT: Re-cooling (or reheating) makes your system work harder and uses more energy. Instead, set your AC temperature 3 degrees higher and your heating temperature 3 degrees lower while you are away. Better yet, install a Smart Thermostat and let the efficiency settings happen automatically.

MYTH: Changing HVAC filters monthly helps your system run efficiently.
FACT: Dirty filters make your system work longer and harder. While monthly changes may be sufficient during winter months, replacements in summer should occur every two weeks.

MYTH: Leaving the ceiling fans running will keep your room cool.
FACT: Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. Turn off fans in unoccupied rooms.

MYTH: Turning off an appliance stops it from using energy.
FACT: Most appliances draw energy even when turned off. Unplug them from the wall.

MYTH: Closing vents and registers saves energy.
FACT: Closing vents and registers redirects airflow to other rooms and expends the same amount of energy. The added pressure from closing a vent could cause air leaks and unnecessary energy waste. Turning your thermostat down in winter and up in summer will save energy.
