Know When to Replace Your AC Unit.

As your thermostat begins its uptick into spring and summer, we’re recommending tips to keep your air conditioner running smoothly. There’s nothing worse than having a nonfunctioning AC unit (or an extremely high electric bill!) when temperatures soar above 90 degrees.

A new cooling system may save you up to 7 percent of your energy usage. If you answer “yes” to any of the questions below, you may want to restore or replace your air conditioner.

Is your air conditioner more than 10 years old?

AC units get more efficient every year. The older your cooling system is, the less likely it is to be nearly as effective as a newer model. Find one with an ENERGY STAR label and you may notice a savings of up to 20 percent if it’s installed properly.

Are your electric bills increasing? Does your air conditioner require repeated repairs?

Your AC unit is aging and probably less adept.

Do you have portions of your home that are too cold or hot?

You may have insufficient insulation, duct issues or equipment that is performing wastefully, causing temperatures to fluctuate.

Is your house unattended for extended stretches of the day without a programmable thermostat?

When set up correctly, a programmable thermostat may aid in conserving money and energy when you’re asleep or not home by having the ability to measure and manage your usage.

Is your house overly humid?

The air in your home may be too humid during summertime because of faulty ductwork or equipment that is defective or runs deficiently.

Does your house have dust?

Tightly closing your ducts in basements, crawl spaces or attics may prevent extra dust from being pumped into common spaces.

Is your cooling system too loud?

The indoor coil of the air conditioner may have a complication, or the duct system might be too small.
