There is Safety in Efficiency

When it comes to your home, you care about the wellbeing of your loved ones above all else. Fire hazards, gas leaks – they are all in the back of your mind, if not top of mind at times.

Efficiency upgrades don’t just save you money, they safeguard your home and family. Sleep a little more soundly with these safety (and efficiency) do's and don’ts.

Don’t Leave Space Heaters Unattended: Space heaters can provide that bit of extra heat needed during a particularly cold spell. Always use them cautiously as they are light enough to be easily knocked over and are often used in spaces without adequate ventilation. Use of a space heater should be done sparingly and always away from curtains, furniture and children. Be sure to place a space heater in a well ventilated, open area and never leave it unattended.

Don’t Use Your Oven to Heat Your Home: Ovens are designed for baking casseroles and muffins, not for home heating. It may seem harmless, but turning on your oven to warm the room could cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Do Properly Ventilate Your Furnace and Stove: Properly ventilated furnaces and stoves will improve air quality and lower your risk of gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Do Inspect Electrical Wiring: Faulty or exposed wiring can cause fires or electric shock.

Do Control Moisture and Humidity: Keep your heating/cooling system working at optimal efficiency with regular filter changes and preventative maintenance checks. Use ceiling fans, run exhaust fans, caulk leaks, and clean air filters and ventilation screens to reduce moisture that can contribute to mold and mildew. Beyond comfort, mold from high moisture increases your risk of respiratory issues.

Do Make the Switch to LEDs: They shed light on many benefits. First, they last much longer than incandescent bulbs while using less electricity. They can provide better visibility, which boosts safety, especially at night. LEDs also emit less heat – a benefit you’ll appreciate on warm days.

Don’t Let Leaks Slip Away: One of the easiest ways to improve safety and energy savings is a well-sealed and insulated home. With proper insulation, less heated or cooled air escapes from your house. Sealing leaks also reduces your home’s dust and allergen levels.
