## Choosing energy efficient holiday lighting

Now that the holidays are here, it’s time to invest in energy-efficient lighting. ENERGY STAR® certified [decorative light strings](https://www.energystar.gov/products/lighting_fans/decorative_light_strings) are crucial because they:

- Use 75% less energy.
- Last up to 10 times longer.
- Save money on utility bills.
- Can be used indoors and outdoors.
- Can feature LED technology.
- Protect the climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Include a manufacturer-backed warranty of at least three years.
- Contain no more than 0.2 watts per bulb.
- Protect against over-voltage.
- Reduce the risk of fire by being cool to the touch.

So when you purchase your lighting decorations, look for the ENERGY STAR label.

 

**Fun Fact**

If all decorative light strings sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR® certified, the country would see an annual energy savings of $850 million. It also would eradicate 9.9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions yearly, which equals the amount of emissions from 940,000 automobiles.
